Which Encoding is the Best for Text Classification in Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean?

چکیده
This article offers an empirical study on the different ways of encoding Chinese, Japanese, Korean (CJK) and English languages for text classification. Different encoding levels are studied, including UTF-8 bytes, characters, words, romanized characters and romanized words. For all encoding levels, whenever applicable, we provide comparisons with linear models, fastText (Joulin et al., 2016) and convolutional networks. For convolutional networks, we compare between encoding mechanisms using character glyph images, one-hot (or one-of-n) encoding, and embedding. In total there are 473 models, using 14 large-scale text classification datasets in 4 languages including Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean. Some conclusions from these results include that byte-level one-hot encoding based on UTF-8 consistently produces competitive results for convolutional networks, that wordlevel n-grams linear models are competitive even without perfect word segmentation, and that fastText provides the best result using character-level n-gram encoding but can overfit when the features are overly rich.

Mining Large-scale Parallel Corpora from Multilingual Patents: An English-Chinese example and its application to SMT
In this paper, we demonstrate how to mine large-scale parallel corpora with multilingual patents, which have not been thoroughly explored before. We show how a large-scale English-Chinese parallel corpus containing over 14 million sentence pairs with only 1-5% wrong can be mined from a large amount of English-Chinese bilingual patents. To our knowledge, this is the largest single parallel corpu...
متن کاملUKP at CrossLink: Anchor Text Translation for Cross-lingual Link Discovery
This paper describes UKP’s participation in the cross-lingual link discovery (CLLD) task at NTCIR-9. The given task is to find valid anchor texts from a new English Wikipedia page and retrieve the corresponding target Wiki pages in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages. We have developed a CLLD framework consisting of anchor selection, anchor ranking, anchor translation, and target discovery ...
متن کاملAINLP at NTCIR-6: Evaluations for Multilingual and Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval
In this paper, a multilingual cross-lingual information retrieval (CLIR) system is presented and evaluated in NTCIR-6 project. We use the language-independent indexing technology to process the text collections of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English languages. Different machine translation systems are used to translate the queries for bilingual and multilingual CLIR. The experimental results...
متن کاملJapanese to English/Chinese/Korean Datasets for Translation Quality Estimation and Automatic Post-Editing
Aiming at facilitating the research on quality estimation (QE) and automatic post-editing (APE) of machine translation (MT) outputs, especially for those among Asian languages, we have created new datasets for Japanese to English, Chinese, and Korean translations. As the source text, actual utterances in Japanese were extracted from the log data of our speech translation service. MT outputs wer...
